Dinner Rolls

Dinner Rolls

Homemade dinner rolls are soft, fluffy, and buttery, pulling apart in warm pillowy pieces. Fresh from the oven with a brush of butter, they beat any store-bought roll. They are the perfect addition to any holiday table or family dinner.

Ingredients

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 cup milk, warm
  • 2 tsp active dry yeast
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup butter, softened
  • 1 egg
  • 1 tsp salt

Instructions

  1. Dissolve the yeast and a pinch of sugar in the warm milk and let it foam for 5 minutes.
  2. Mix in the sugar, butter, egg, salt, and flour to form a soft dough, then knead until smooth.
  3. Cover and let it rise until doubled, about 1 hour.
  4. Divide the dough into balls and arrange them close together in a baking dish.
  5. Cover and let rise until puffy and touching, about 30 minutes.
  6. Bake at 190C (375F) for 18 to 20 minutes until golden, then brush with melted butter.

💡 Chef's tip

Let the rolls rise until puffy and touching before baking; this second rise is what makes them soft and pull-apart tender.

Enriching the dough with milk, butter, and egg is what gives dinner rolls their tender, soft crumb and rich flavor, distinct from a lean bread dough.
