Swedish Meatballs

Swedish Meatballs

Swedish meatballs are tender, spiced beef meatballs in a rich, creamy gravy. The savory sauce, warmed with a hint of nutmeg, coats every meatball in comfort. Serve them over egg noodles or mashed potatoes for a cozy dinner.

Ingredients

  • 700 g ground beef
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs
  • 1 egg
  • 1/2 onion, grated
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 2 cups beef broth
  • 1/2 cup heavy cream
  • a pinch nutmeg

Instructions

  1. Mix the beef, breadcrumbs, egg, grated onion, nutmeg, salt, and pepper, then roll into small meatballs.
  2. Brown the meatballs in butter on all sides, then set aside.
  3. Whisk the flour into the pan drippings and cook for 1 minute.
  4. Slowly whisk in the broth and bring to a simmer until thickened.
  5. Stir in the cream and a pinch of nutmeg.
  6. Return the meatballs, simmer 10 minutes until cooked through, and serve over noodles.

💡 Chef's tip

Brown the meatballs well and build the gravy in the same pan; the fond left behind is the foundation of a deeply flavored sauce.

A pinch of nutmeg and allspice in both the meatballs and gravy is what gives Swedish meatballs their distinctive warm, subtly sweet flavor that sets them apart from Italian-style ones.
