Ingredients
- 600 g ground beef
- 1 onion, diced
- 1 bell pepper, diced
- 3/4 cup ketchup
- 2 tbsp tomato paste
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 6 burger buns
Instructions
- Brown the ground beef in a skillet, breaking it up, then drain the fat.
- Add the onion and bell pepper and cook until softened.
- Stir in the ketchup, tomato paste, brown sugar, and Worcestershire.
- Add a splash of water and simmer for 10 minutes until thick and saucy.
- Season to taste with salt and pepper.
- Spoon the mixture onto toasted buns and serve.
💡 Chef's tip
Drain the rendered fat after browning the beef; it keeps the sloppy joe mixture rich but not greasy.
Cooking the sauce down with the beef rather than just stirring it in lets the meat absorb the sweet-tangy flavor and thickens it so it piles onto the bun instead of running off.
