Chocolate Cake

Chocolate Cake

This classic chocolate cake is moist, tender, and deeply chocolatey, perfect for birthdays or any celebration. A simple batter bakes into soft layers that pair beautifully with a silky chocolate frosting. It is an easy, foolproof cake that tastes like it came from a bakery.

Ingredients

  • 2 cups flour
  • 2 cups sugar
  • 3/4 cup cocoa powder
  • 2 eggs
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup vegetable oil
  • 1 cup hot coffee
  • 2 tsp baking soda

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 175C (350F) and grease two round cake pans.
  2. Whisk together the flour, sugar, cocoa, baking soda, and a pinch of salt.
  3. Add the eggs, milk, and oil and mix until smooth.
  4. Stir in the hot coffee; the batter will be thin.
  5. Divide between the pans and bake for 30 to 35 minutes until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Cool completely, then frost with chocolate frosting and assemble the layers.

💡 Chef's tip

Do not overmix once the flour goes in; stir just until combined to keep the cake tender rather than dense and tough.

Adding hot coffee to the batter blooms the cocoa and intensifies the chocolate flavor without making the cake taste like coffee, while keeping the crumb incredibly moist.
