Apple Crumble

Apple Crumble

Warm spiced apples under a buttery, golden crumble topping make one of the coziest desserts there is. It is simple to throw together and fills the kitchen with the smell of cinnamon and baked fruit. Serve it hot with a scoop of vanilla ice cream.

Ingredients

  • 6 apples
  • 150 g flour
  • 100 g butter, cold
  • 100 g sugar
  • 1 tsp cinnamon

Instructions

  1. Heat the oven to 190C (375F).
  2. Peel, core, and slice the apples, then toss with cinnamon, a spoon of sugar, and a spoon of flour.
  3. Spread the apples in a baking dish.
  4. Rub the cold butter into the flour and remaining sugar with your fingertips until the mixture looks like coarse crumbs.
  5. Scatter the crumble topping evenly over the apples.
  6. Bake for 35 to 40 minutes until the topping is golden and the fruit is bubbling at the edges.
  7. Cool for 10 minutes, then serve warm with ice cream or custard.

💡 Chef's tip

Rub the cold butter into the flour and sugar with your fingertips until it looks like coarse crumbs, which gives the topping its signature craggy crunch.

Tossing the sliced apples with a spoon of flour or cornstarch thickens their juices as they bake so the filling is saucy rather than watery.
