Tuna Noodle Casserole

Tuna Noodle Casserole

Tuna noodle casserole is a creamy, comforting bake of egg noodles, tuna, and peas in a savory sauce with a crispy topping. It is a budget-friendly, pantry-staple dinner that feeds the whole family. Nostalgic and satisfying, it comes together in one dish.

Ingredients

  • 350 g egg noodles
  • 2 cans canned tuna, drained
  • 1 cup frozen peas
  • 3 tbsp butter
  • 3 tbsp flour
  • 2.5 cups milk
  • 1 cup shredded cheese
  • 1/2 cup breadcrumbs

Instructions

  1. Cook the egg noodles until just underdone, then drain.
  2. Melt the butter, whisk in the flour, then slowly add the milk to make a sauce.
  3. Stir in the cheese until melted, then fold in the tuna, peas, and noodles.
  4. Transfer to a baking dish and top with breadcrumbs.
  5. Bake at 190C (375F) for 20 to 25 minutes until bubbly and golden.
  6. Let it rest a few minutes, then serve.

💡 Chef's tip

Slightly undercook the noodles before baking; they continue to soften in the oven and stay perfectly tender instead of mushy.

Making a quick homemade cream sauce instead of canned soup gives a fresher flavor and lets you control the salt and richness.
