Bibimbap

Bibimbap

Bibimbap is a vibrant Korean rice bowl crowned with an array of seasoned vegetables, savory beef, and a glossy fried egg. The magic happens when you mix everything together with spicy-sweet gochujang sauce, blending warm rice, crisp vegetables, and rich egg yolk into one harmonious bite. It is as beautiful to look at as it is satisfying to eat, making a colorful meal for two.

Ingredients

  • 2 bowls cooked rice
  • 200 g ground beef
  • 2 cups spinach
  • 1 each carrot and zucchini
  • 2 eggs

Instructions

  1. Cook short-grain white rice until fluffy and keep it warm, as freshly cooked hot rice is essential for the dish.
  2. Prepare each vegetable separately: blanch the spinach and season it with sesame oil, salt, and garlic, then saute julienned carrots and sliced shiitake mushrooms individually so each keeps its own flavor.
  3. Season thinly sliced beef with soy sauce, sugar, garlic, and sesame oil, then stir-fry it over high heat for 2 to 3 minutes until cooked through and lightly caramelized.
  4. Make the sauce by stirring together gochujang, sesame oil, sugar, a splash of water, and rice vinegar until smooth.
  5. Fry an egg in a hot oiled pan until the white is set but the yolk remains runny, about 2 minutes over medium heat.
  6. Divide the warm rice between two bowls and arrange the seasoned vegetables and beef in neat sections on top, fanning out the colors.
  7. Place a fried egg in the center of each bowl, add a spoonful of the gochujang sauce, and serve immediately, instructing diners to mix everything together thoroughly before eating.

💡 Chef's tip

If you want the signature crispy rice crust called nurungji, assemble and press the bowl in a hot oiled stone or cast iron pot and let the bottom layer sizzle undisturbed for a few minutes before serving.

Seasoning and cooking each vegetable separately (rather than together) is the heart of bibimbap - it keeps every color and flavor distinct until you mix them at the table.
